Layered protection.
SonicWALL's own approach to UTM creates a security environment where firewalling, content protection and anti-virus, and intrusion prevention are all delivered on a single hardware platform. Protection starts at the gateway, and blocks both internal and external threats at multiple access points and at all network layers.
Deep packet inspection.
SonicWALL's deep packet inspection (DPI) engine goes beyond ordinary stateful inspection. DPI matches all downloaded, e-mailed, and even compressed files against an extensive, continuously updated signature database, scanning all files in real time to block things like macro viruses and packed executables. While standard stateful inspection looks at the network layer, DPI also goes out to the application layer to address the many attacks that take advantage of application vulnerabilities. DPI scans multiple protocols, including SMTP, POP3, IMAP, FTP, HTTP, NetBIOS and many others, as well as over 50 application types. Of course, it also scans all network layers as well.
Superior performance.
With SonicWALL, you enjoy this complete level of protection without a performance hit. There are other UTM solutions, but many of them require file caching and rebooting to accommodate the process of updating the file signatures and scanning procedures, and that reboot/cache process slows down the computer and hinders productivity. Because SonicWALL can handle files of any size without caching, and hundreds of thousands of concurrent downloads, it offers superior performance for any size network. Also, SonicWALL has eliminated the common requirement of rebooting after the signature file update--so there's no need for productivity to be interrupted for any reason.
Real-time security.
Part of the UTM equation is gateway anti-virus, anti-spyware and intrusion prevention built into NSA and TZ Series gateway appliances. This robust level of protection offers real-time security against a wide variety of exploits, including software vulnerabilities and all types of malicious code. By combining desktop protection with gateway protection, you get the highest level of security possible, and are protected from not only external attacks, but against those that start from within the network as well. Web and e-mail security solutions also form a part of the UTM umbrella of protection, with both inbound and outbound e-mail protection and a system that enforces your internal policies and compliance with relevant regulations.
